This starting problem makes me feel stupid

Gun,
To determine TDC I took off the number 1 plug and bumped the starter around with my remote starter until it blew my thumb off the hole for the plug. Looked at the rotor, marked distrib as it aligns with the cap, rotated distrib until it is pointing to number one on the cap etc...

While cranking, have someone rotate the distributor in either direction to see if it makes a difference. A timing light also should tell you where you're at.

Your timing could still be off quite bit. You determined you're on the compression stroke, not necessarily tdc. But from my readings here, I'm guessing you're putting the crank balancer at tdc per the marks and pointer?
