Default 1966 AC Oil Leak

I had to remove the AC compressor last night and I stored it on the work bench overnight with the pulley facing down. This morning there was a puddle of oil on the bench which must have leaked from the compressor. How do I add oil back to the compressor, where specifically? What type as well? I bought the car about 5 years ago, the AC has never blown cold, just warm air. The compressor and the blower work fine but I presume it needs a recharge. Not sure if it was ever converted from R12. The car is a convertible so I really don't plan to use the AC but now that the oil has leaked out I would like to top it off and not cause any damage to the compressor. Thanks for the help

Usually the oil is added when its recharged. You can tell by the valves if its R12 or R-134. As long as the compressor isnt used, there wont be any damage if left alone. There should be enought oil left or a film on the piston and cylinder still.

How big a puddle?

Losing a table spoon or two won't matter.
As per the good advice above, there is enough oil thought out the entire system to keep things lubricated.

There shouldn't have been any leaks with the pulley face down on an oem c'pressor. Unless it ran out of the hose ports.
I found my old service manual from when I used to do these: The York compressor uses about 10 oz of oil and the Tecumseh unit uses 11 oz of oil. You check oil level through the hole on the side of the c'pressor case. You need to put a 1/8 rod that you have flattened in the bolt hole and touch the bottom of the unit. then pull it out. The York should have 3/4" oil level and the Tecumseh unit should have about 7/8 inch. Drain any excess, add anything short.

I would say a few ounces of oil was on the workbench.

Thanks for the advice.
