Default Going from 2 barrel to 4 barrel carb

I have a 351W that I'm trying to get fixed up as a daily driver. The engine has the original stock Autolite 2-barrel carb that it was born with. The carb needs to be completely rebuilt or replaced and I'm leaning towards the latter as the point of least resistance at this point. Also, there are a lot more options in 4-barrel carbs so it seems a logical choice.

From what I understand I'll need to replace the intake manifold as well to accommodate this change (I also read they make adapter plates for this but that seems like a poor solution, if i'm going to take it all apart then why not do it right y'know?) I've been looking at Summit racing and I'm thinking of going with an Edelbrock setup, any recommendations on which specific options to consider? Other than the manifold and the carb is there anything else I need to order to complete this upgrade?

Also, what about the compression ratio? Mine is 9:5:1 currently I believe but does this need to change? What is involved with this, I've never messed with this before?

thanks gents

Call summit tech and ask them they should help, is it auto or stick?

Consider a cam upgrade while in there and headers.
More CR would take lots of work and 9.5 for pump gas is fine. Are you sure it's that much?

OK so no need to mess with the CR with this upgrade then? I was curious just because from what I've read the 1969s that came with the 4 barrel 351s had their CR set to 10 I believe.

Thanks to everyone for the advice, I've heard lots of god things about the Edelbrock 600 and 650s with the matching intake so I think I will call Summit and see what they say.

Are you sure your engine is original? After 45 years, a reman could have been installed.
CR mods require new pistons mostly, or could shave the heads for a few points.
Cheapest option might be a holley 500 cfm 2 barrel.

Edelbrock isn't a bad choice. I have been using Holley all my life and they are probably the most experienced carb building company out there. I would stay in the 600CFM Vac secondary range if your not going to be doing a lot of mods down the line. As far as the intake most duel plane intakes should be fine. Personal choice but the magazines all rave about the Edelbrock Air gap manifold.

if you buy an eddy carb, imo, there may be around a 99.999% chance you will be back here asking how to tune it.

eddy's are decent once they are properly tuned.

Wow. . . theres too many options and too many opinions for what you're asking. If the motor is out of the car, then take the time to go through it by pulling the pan and checking the bearing gaps to see if it needs rebuilt. A rebuild will introduce entirely new options and costs. If its still in the car and you're confident its a strong running motor, then maybe all you need is an intake and carb solution. Adding a cam to the mix is nice, but at that point you're tearing down the top end of the motor and you might as well pull it and go through it. If what you're after is a good carb/intake, edelbrock performer series is a nice driver package that's a bolt in. Personally the edel carb is easy to work on, and easy to tune (everything drops in from the top while the carb is still on the car), with a single fuel line feed that makes it easy to install. Though Holley is a better performance carb, it is more complicated to tear down and requires more work and money to set up, but the end result is a better package. My suggestion, keep it simple until you're confident to move on to bigger and better.
