methanol/water injector
i was thinking of purchasing a methanol/water injection boost cooler for my mustang. I was wondering if your car HAS to be supercharged for it to be efective or if i can safely use it as a less potent alternative to nitrous, can i use it without a supercharger and still gain horsepower from it? here is what summit racing says in product descrip.
Snow Performance Boost Cooler Stage-1 Water/Methanol Injection Systems
Chemical intercooling for more power.
In gasoline engines, as with any intercooler, Stage-1 Boost Coolers suppress detonation, so more power-producing boost and timing can be utilized. Water, with its high latent heat of vaporization, cools the intake charge and combustion. Methanol cools the charge and combustion, but also acts like an extremely high-octane fuel (some researchers claim as high as 120 octane) and adds more oxygen to combustion. These systems contain everything needed to start making big HP! They're designed for use in gasoline (6-15 psig boost) supercharged/turbocharged vehicles.

RE: methanol/water injector
It's probably not the most effective use of your money. Unless you're having inlet air heat soak issues then you're better off looking elsewhere. If you're planning on boosting your motor later, then I'd reccomend buying it after you add the boost. Just my opinion...

RE: methanol/water injector
Back in '80 I used a fuel injector from a 260Z duct taped to the velocity stack, plumbed and wired it through the windshield washer system. Then filled the washer bottle with a mix of rubbing alcohol and water (would have used everclear but we were too young to buy the stuff ). We had the timing cranked up so hi to keep the Holley DP 750 from bogging off the line that it would start to detonate about mid track. The driver would just hit the windshield washer button and it worked like magic. Put down some pretty good times that way.
Real racers would look at it, just shake their heads and walk away. [sm=icon_rofl.gif]
Water and alcohol have a low caloric or BTU value in relation to gasoline, so unless you have a detonation problem you can't fix another way, I'd suggest staying away from this. It's not real good for the aluminum components either.
Nitrous is much more fun anyways!
