Default Mustang convertible noise when raising top

Just bought a '99 mustang convertible for my daughter, makes a noise when you first press the up button to raise the top, lasts about a second and a half, sounds like a grinding gear, drivers side.

Operates normally otherwise, retracts quietly.

Any experience? Theories? Online resources?

Thanks!

i would have someone else push the button while you stand outside the vehicle or jump in the back seat or open the trunk and stick your head in there. i don't think anything would grind on the driver side. maybe the top gets wedge on something and then breaks loose.

sounds weird, my top (while not as new) makes some noise but none that remind me of grinding gears, might have to get into the motor, which will be more than just opening the trunk. Sorry I don't have any real answers for you, somebody around here should be able to help though.
