ya find a good mechanic who has delt with stuff like that before... since u said it does it very sporadically i bet its a wiring issue, just a guess but in the end i think thats what its gonna be.... doesnt sound like anything thats going to cost you alot... (besides that alternater u had to pay for<IMG src=smileys/smiley19.gif border="0"> ) but ya im surprised the dealer didnt find anything in the diagnostical test on your electrical system... hope the mechanic can help u get ur stang up and running again <IMG src=smileys/smiley16.gif border="0">

Thanks peanut, I appreciate the help. I'll call around and see if someone can recommend a good mechanic.</P>
Hi budman, </P>
It happens sitting still, driving uphill, going around a turn, but never when I go over a bump (and we live on a dirt road) It isn't just the radio, it's the CD player too. I really do think it's a power surge, rather than a short.</P>
I drove her this morning to work, and kept the stereo turned off. Didn't do it. I turned the stereo back on and still didn't do it. I'll keep the stereo offthis afternoon when I put the top down and turn on the lights, and watch the gauges. </P>
Still trying to figure out if it's the stereo or the electrical system in the car.</P><edited><editID>SweetSally</editID><editDate>37831.4200694444</editDate></edited>

Yer getting a main bus short of some sort. Yeah, screw the dealer on this one. Dont take it to a mech though, its gonna need an electrician to find yer short. Its pretty easy, and like bud said, it could be yer battery terminals shorting to the frame of the car. If anything its not too far down yer wiring harness from the battery. I have a feeling that its before yer ignition being that yer battery goes dead if you let it sit. Which means it has a constant short cause its draining yer battery, and the thump is coming from something moving around when you drive andsuddenly creating more metal to metal contact and shutting down all systems. You should get this fixed quickly because you could end up having to buy a new computer with all these surges.</P>
Oh, if its not prior to the ignition, make sure to check all yer fuses then. You might have a short somewherePLUS a bad, blown fuse. A bad blown fuse is a fuse that initially does its job correctly and blows when an over amperage occurs. Being that its a bad blown fuse though, when temperatures drop in the fuse the element drops back down or stretches back out creating contact again in that certain system. Allowing you to restart yer car and all its systems.</P>
Always remember. Techs at a dealership are just parts monkeys. Most of them only know how to plug cars into a computer and change out parts. Very few of them actually own stangs and even fewer know what theyre talking about.</P>

Thanks brockleew. I'm starting to get the picture now.And it wasn't the alternater...bastards got me. I should have known better. My second husband and I used to rebuild motors, and I've had grease under my nails since I was 16. The battery started loosing its charge about the same time the thumping in the speakers started. I'll let you know what I find, might help someone else with a similar problem.</P>
Thanks to everyone for helping me out!</P>
