Default Explorer swap

Hi i am new to the forums and interested in mustangs if i can get specifics on this particular swap. I was having a conversation with a mustang owner and he was telling me about people putting the engine from a explorer into a early 90's mustang. He said it was a pretty common swap but i havent been able to find infoabout it. He was telling me that the explorer engine pushed a little over 400 hp whereas the mustang 5.0 engine was around 300. Can anyone clear this up for me or give me some info into the swap? Thanks.

The explorers have a better intake and GT40 heads. The mustang has about 225hp and the explorer motors have 240. Im pretty sure the stock cam in the mustangs is much better than the explorer cam so your much better off just putting a set of gt40 heads and explorer intake on the motor you have now and be around 250-255hp but nowhere near 400hp. To get near 400(at the crank) your going to need a good set of aftermarket aluminum heads, a decent sized cam and an aftermarket intake, etc.

The Explorer 5.0L engine is very similar to the '93 Cobra engine but with less hp and broader torque curve due to the different cam. The Explorer also had alot of pinches and sharp turns in the intake and exhaust that hurt power. The later Explorer 5.0L engines had the slightly revised GT40P heads for a little more power and efficiency. The GT40P spark plug is at a different angle and can cause problems if you want to use aftermarket headers with these heads on a Mustang. Make sure the headers are compatible with the P heads before you buy them.

Explorer 5.0L ('97) is rated at 210hp@ 4500rpm and 280 ft lbs @3500rpm....around the same output as a regular Mustang 5.0L.

'93 Cobra 5.0L engine was rated at 235hp at 4600 rpm and 280ft lbs @4000rpm.

If you want to drop in an Explorer engine, you'll need to swap over alot of the Mustang parts (or aftermarket) onto the engine.

oil pan
timing cover
distributor
cam
accessories
sensors
throttle body/EGR spacer
emissions system has to be modified

and probably more.

Its really not that bad of a project. About the same as any other engine swap when starting with the stripped down longblock. It just isn't anywhere close to the power numbers you were told. Even with a better cam, and full aftermarket exhaust, you probably won't be much over 300hp at the flywheel with the stock Explorer heads and intake. Probably 265hp/300 ftlbs at the wheels.

Default RE: Explorer swap

I recently purchased a new Explorer 5.0 crate engine and have been having a hard time finding engine specifications for it. I am using it to upgrade my 1974 Glastron boat that had a 302 Ford/Volvo engine in it with a Holley 450 CFM 4 bbl carburetor. I am accumulating Volvo and OMC parts to fit it with fuel injection. I am trying to do a "retro mod" type of thing with the boat.

I was trying to find torque curves to find out what I can expect from it and how well the Explorer torque curves will match up with boat requirements. Mik3 83 GLX is the first that I have seen regarding any information.

Any information I can get on this would be helpful.

Thanks,

Jim Marshall
