Default How do I get rid of excessive play in the steering wheel???

Igot an 86 lx that feels like it has excessive play in the steering wheel. There is a about a 2"-3" area on each side that when i turn the steering wheel nothing happens. Just trying to see what that could be so that I can get to work on fixing it. Any help is appreciated![/align]

You did not say how many miles were on your car, but on higher mileage cars the steering box just wears out. You could also have bad tie rods. Some if not all steering boxes have an adjustment right on the box. They usualy look like a threaded bolt with a slot in it held tight with a large hex nut. As far as the tie rods go, just jack up the front of the car, grab a wheel, & see if you can turn them inward/outward without the steering wheel moving. If they move they are probably worn. Also check the ball joints, &pitman arm

I don't think his car has a pitman arm/center link/idler arm. I could be wrong though. My 90 GT had rack and pinion. It could be a bad tie rod. Everything he said basically^.

Check the rag joint/coupler. It is located on the steering shaft approx. 4" up from where the rack and pinion connects to the shaft.

Thanks guys for your suggestions. I will check everything that you mentioned. I had the rack and pinion changed so I will focus on the u joints and rag joint but won't exclude the tie rods from the problems either. I will keep you guys informed.

Thanks James
