Who bought a base model so they could mod?
#11
After looking at gt premiums running 35-36k with everything but nag system.... Looks like I'm going to have to rule that out. I'd like leather but can live without and will probably do aftermarket nav unit. But I could have swore when the 2011 came out, base model was like 25k. Now it's like $27,xxx.
Anyone else have to get a base model and give up luxuries so they could mod?

From several accounts, on the net and also from what I heard in person, the Nav package is not all that. So I could live without that. I have a Garmin anyway.
If I put in a good radio Nav system, it will defo be aftermarket. As for the base stock radio, it surprisingly does not sound bad at all.
The '11 GT (non-Premium, no options) actually retailed at $29500 MSRP.
The $25000 you heard was with discounts (rebates, incentives, A/D/X/etc-plans) and also the buyer haggling the S*** out of the salesman.
As for performance, the no-options GT and the Premium sub-trim have absolutely no performance differences.
The only thing that options can improve is handling: Brembos, rear gear options, handling package.
But IIRC, the handling options can by put on either the Premium and non-Premium subtrims. I dont think you have to buy a Premium-subtrim to get 3.73:1 rear gear, and/or Brembos.

I guess if you were to purchase a base model Mustang without all the cool gadgets/and or performance options, you could purchase used but in good condition modification items (ebay, craiglist, this forum) and save some dough....

I bought the cheapest most basic S197 that was available back in 2006. I knew car was going to be modded in the extreme. Six years later, it is no longer street-legal nor streetable. Has gone through multiple motor, transmission, fuel system changes.

Base model, Brembo, 3.73 here. It's lighter than a premium, handles a little better and stops more consistantly. It's a Boss w/ out getting a Boss! Lol. I bought it #1 for the driving experience, #2 as a DD, and #3 b/c it is bad-A**! Looks like sex rolling down the road, almost as fun as sex, and VERY confortable. I don't NEED all the bells and whistles. If I choose to do that later, I can.

2012 Lava Red 300A with Brembo's and 3.73's
85% of the performance of a Boss for $8K less.
IMO the Premium content wasn't worth the extra cost.
