mustang always the smaller engine why??

HP is what wins drag races, at least it does if your tranny and axle gearing is anywhere near right for the rest of your combination. The simple formulas used to estimate quarter mile performance all work from power and weight.
Ford only needs to build a car that is competitive in its market segment, not one that absolutely dominates every possible aspect relative to the competition. I'm thinking beyond the various performance numbers here - not everybody buys these cars only for the engine.

The BMW M3 doesn't do too bad on road courses with it's puny 414 hp 4.0 liter 4-cam 32-valve V8 making only 290 ft lbs of torque!

The Mustang is smaller and lighter. Why does it need a bigger engine? Besides it already blows everybody away. The "little" 4.6 is faster than the Hemi Challenger and almost matches the 6.2L in the Camaro because of the weight difference.
Now with the new 5.0 the Camaro boys will be shaking in their boots.

sure if u wanna push into 8s in the 1/4, bigger is better...on the road though I'd say ford got it right for next year puttin the 5.0 back on the market! you don't need bigger for red light to red light runs...put some 4.10s or 4.30 gears in there

I know I'm gonna get flamed for this, but just about the most fun I've had in a car was in a Honda S2000 and a twisty open road. It's just a little 4 banger, but the micro light weight and some really superior engineering gives it a 5.6 sec. 0-60 time. Sure wails like a banshee tho! I finally decided not to get one because I just didn't think I could handle the whine as a daily driver. Muscle car drivers get obsessed with hp numbers. IMHO, what makes a driver's car is the weight/hp/torque ratio, smooth acceleration, balance, handling, and some other intangibles.
