opinions for a budget race car?
Hi everyone this is my first post on here.
I putting a feeler out on here to get yall's opinion on the subject. I want to get into racing whether it be track days, autoX, and more recently rallycross after watching Top Gear do for less than $2000. I think sliding around on dirt/wet road for fun sounds amazing. But I want to do it on a budget 5k or less.
Can you buy a decent car for 5k or less?
Requirements
RWD or AWD
Not DD, already have one this would be just for racing and to thrash about.
Manual
2-door or 4-door
pretty reliable or can handle a day at the track and able to drive back home afterwards
closest rally track from me is 1hr away so is a race track, autoX is all over town.
what do y'all think?

I agree with the Miata suggestion, great for autoX and inexpensive to fix up. You would want and likely need a roll bar/cage if you put it on the track. Most clubs won't let convertibles run without a roll bar at HPDEs.

Older post but might help someone. My first track car is 88 LX, have around $5000.00 in car and parts made decent track car. Explorer heads and intake, E cam, short headers, frame and strut tower stiffeners, lowered springs, MM pan hard bar.
Wanted to wtw race, got a ready built old Spec Miata for $6000.00, great car in turns if you don't mind the 115 hp in the straights. Tracks around here require a hardtop for HPDE, not sure about auto x. Hard to come by and cost close to $1000.00.
Some short videos of both in action.
