Default Tire Size

08 GT. 17x8 stock rims. Currently have 255 45/17's. No issues at all. Can I safely go a little wider/higher profile? Suspension lowered 1" or so all around.

Not on an 8 inch width rim. My car's optional wheel package in '06 with the 18x8.5 fanblades came with 235/50/18's. I could have went to 255 but that was the max width allowed for my 8.5 inch 18's and Ford recommended 235. Some shops won't even put the tire on the rim unless it's the recommended size.

I'd imagine you're already pushing it with 255's on an 8 inch rim. You'd need to upgrade rim width for more tire width.

255/50-17 is the usual upgrade from 235/55 for those staying on the 17x8 wheels. The diameter difference (less than 3/16" taller) is negligible. There isn't much of anything in 17" that's wider without being a LOT wider and needing wheels that are 9" wide or wider.
