Default carb Conversion

I converted an 88 lx hatch to a carb. I used a victor jr. single plane intake. a holley 650, 4150 series double pumper. The carb was jetted and tuned to the engine. I installed a B303 camshaft with roller rocker arms{1.7 ratio}, longtube headers{motorsport 1 5/8 primaries and 3" collectors}. I had a friend of mine at a local muffler shop make and install an x-over pipe with 2 chamber flowmasters. I ran a 21" piece of 3" pipe after the muffler. Never just run a flowmaster with nothing but the little stubby end on it. the muffler will not scavenge very well. I used a mechanical advance MSD billet distributor with the required steel gear. I installed a 3.73 rear gear and rebuilt the traction lock rearend. I also installed a msd 6al box the handle the ignition duties. I drove the car everyday and when I check the gas mileage it was getting about 20 miles to the gallon. I was really surpized by that. I ran the car a commerce dragway in atlanta georgia on several occasions. On street tires I manage a spinning 12.45 in the 1/4 mile. After some tuning to the cars suspension and use of some slicks I was able to post a 11.96 1/4 mile. It's not that hard to go from efi to card, just do your homework and things should go ok.

im not wrong. Im sure all of you have laptop computers. plug that crap in an tune away. best way is a dyno for carbs too. so that was a dumb statement. EFI adapts to conditions itself. you dont need a choke. you dont need to worry bout your carb being jetted correctly. it calculates its own fuel maps. today was a nice 65 degrees, so you got your carbed jetted for that, but after i got out of class it was like 35, now do you think im going to rejet my carb in the middle of the parkling lot to make it run good for the trip home? no, EFI did it instantly when i started the car.

but again. most people are affraid of new things that are accually better becuase they dont know how it works.

yes a porperly tuned carb will run fine, but EFI will do it cleaner and just as good. and you dont have to keep retuning and jetting it.

wrong on the best way to tune a carb, its a drag strip, you go for the highest mph you get. and what are you tlaking about changing the jet, just have an elec. choke, start the car, wait for it to warm up and your doing fine. i ran a 780cfm holley all last winter, it would start right up and run fine down the road within 1-2min.

regardless of initial start up. if the air outside is 10 degrees, obviously you want it rich. if the air outside is 90 degrees you want to be leaner. have fun with your screw driver.

i have a carbed car. im not being biased. i know how to tune a carb. i know how to work on a carb. buit id rather have EFI

i give credit where credit is due. and EFI is hands down better than a carb.

now price difference obviously carb is better.

Look at my 85 Gt I sold to my cousin.I've got pics posted. I had a 650 D.P., and Holley red pump on a 93-H.O. , world class t-5 and 3.73 gears. MSD 6AL, Blaster-3 coil, and MSD billet distributor with mechanical advance (go for the vaccum advance one, it's like $20 more) but mechanical advance is for the strip only. This thing got 12mpg on the interstate and 1-4mpg in town. Getting to my point. the screws are just Idle richness, you have to re-jet it to get it right for different outside temps. Been there done that.

Cold start has never been a problem on the two carbed cars ive had (73 plymouth scamp, 83 stang). Just pump the gas once and it fires right up after sitting overnight.

Apparently you don't know as much as you think about carbs and tuning. Changing the jets/rods and having a correctly adjusted choke make things so much easier with the car to run. My car can sit for a week and all I have to do is turn the key and within its first revolution it starts right up.
