1986 5.0 Mustang GT won't idle
I've been restoring a '86 GT. The distributor was replaced along with the ignition coil, module, wires, fuel filter, etc. After owning this car for the last 25 years, the engine used to turn over on the first click of the key. Not now! Now there is no cold idle and in order to get the car to idle I have to constantly pump the gas pedal until the car warms up. The engine is set to idle at 2000 rpm, otherwise it will stall. While the car is warming up and I pump the pedal, the engine RPM's increase when I release the gas pedal, not when I push on it, which, of course, is the opposite way it should work.
My thoughts are:
1. the distributor is installed wrong (it was installed with the "thumb in the #1 sparkplug hole" trick and then the timing marks were lined up on the balancer).
2. the cats and/or mufflers are clogged (the car has been off the road for 8 years)
3. the fuel pump or regulator are shot (original from '86)
Any advice? Thanks!
