Racing the Hellcat Challenger

So, i was on the first wave of the media launch for the 2015 Challenger SRT Hellcat. Drive impressions are under embargo, but videos are not so I got up a couple videos of me taking it down the quarter mile.

It was a bare setup quarter mile, running on the on-board timing system rather than lasers, but it gives you an idea of what it can do. I made two runs (one in a black car, one in a red car) on a fully unprepped track and managed a best of 11.8 at 118mph. in my second run, i came out too hard and had to get in and out of it at the start so i went 12.5 at 116. some guys damn near put it into the wall at the starting line, coming out just a little too hard.

Again, i cant go into much detail about the car until the 22nd, but I figured that some of you might like an early look from the newest competition.

The first video, i forgot to turn the camera off...so there is the pass and then a minute+ of me driving down the return road.

Finally, i have a video of me with the Hellcat on the road course. I started first of five, and finished first.

First lap is a pace lap, second and third laps are wide open, fourth lap is a cool down. Top speeds on the back stretch got up around 140 and the front stretch got up to 125 or so.

Badass! thanks for the videos man. That must feel amazing to get a first look and drive.

cool deal.....

even if it's in the wrong sub-forum.... :icon_dance-twist:

I thought about posting them in the video section, but since they are directly racing and since some of you will likely be dealing with them soon, i thought that the racing crowd would be more interested in them than the general video viewers.

Those cars are so cool looking and with 700 hp (right?), even better. I always liked them except they are a bit ......portly. Hopefully they put that badass piece on a bit of a diet.

Nice videos.

Demon 340 07-17-2014 06:10 PM

It hasnt gotten any lighter, but theyve done a ton of chassis and suspension dynamics to make it a good handling tank with 707hp.

ctgreddy 07-17-2014 10:08 PM

awesome vids! I knew before the hp numbers were released that it would be a bit more than the gt500. There's no way after coming into the game so late, they would have this car be less powerful than the shelby. Especially since I heard they wanted it to be a 200mph car, and being how heavy these things are it needs lots of horsepowers!

I cant wait to get one in my work so we can see what it really puts down to the tires. assuming it should be 640~ area. Also I'm really hoping I can find one on the streets ;).

Funny thing is that autoblog reported the Hellcat's top speed is 199mph hahaha, couldn't break 200mph :P

MustangVixenGT 07-17-2014 11:21 PM

While my heart belongs to Mustangs, I love the Challengers they are sexy looking cars. Would not mind having one that and maybe a Super Bee :)

Demon 340 07-17-2014 11:23 PM

yeah...i did a piece about that for TorqueNews. It hasnt been in an official statement, but it came up in talks at the event. Im surprised, but its a big, heavy ass car.

MustangVixenGT 07-17-2014 11:32 PM

Challengers always been a hefty girl :P Although it does puzzle me as to why the newer chargers are heavier than the challengers...

Demon 340 07-17-2014 11:43 PM

The new chargers are alot bigger than the challengers and they have twice as many gadgets in the doors like window motors, heavier rear seats, etc.

bluebeastsrt 07-18-2014 03:09 AM

This car should help Dodge move more Challys and Chargers. Now that the 392 is going in the R/T they'll have a car to compete with the Mustang and Camaro on a more direct price point. I heard they will put the Hellcat in the Chargers. Can you confirm that?

The GT500 has failed in numerous tests as well (a lot of people try to use short tracks to pull off top speed runs and its just not enough straightaway)... hitting that close to 200 means someone with the right track setup will make it happen though. (*Unless its gear limited*) pretty impressive.

Stone629 07-18-2014 05:05 PM

Those runs are impressive considering you didn't really launch it, but more or less rolled into it on that first run and pedaled it on the second. With some tires, someone with plenty of practice with the thing, and a well prepped track, that sucker ought to run damn close to low 11s high 10s I would think. Be nice to see a somewhat stripped down version for the track guys.

NHRA certified 10.80s with drag radial I believe

10.86 is what it ran. Deff impressive. Due to the weight I assumed the thing would struggle to go any faster than the gt500, but I guess that extra 40 hp overshadows the 300 some pounds difference.

Jeez, that takes some engineering effort to push a heavy car like that to a 10.86 on just DRs. Wonder if anyone has any dyno graphs of one. Curious to see if its underrated a bit.
