Noob with some questions
Hello all.
New to Mustangs but not to cars/trucks or bikes.
Ive got a neighbor whose grandson blew the engine in his Mustang.
Its a 2000 AT w/3.8L.
They said they rebuilt the trans about 10K back. Ive heard the engine and its not any good. I can get it for 300 which I dont have an issue with. I can get a used engine pretty cheap and I have everything I need to swap it out myself. I can build one if needed but from what i can tell in prices for a master rebuild kit, plus possibly a new crank or used heads (IDK where the issue is at) plus machining and time involved, Im wondering if a new stock drop in might be better?
Used engines worry me as you just dont know what you are getting.
Best price on a new/reman is around 1700 w/a 3yr wrnty. Anyone got anything better out there?
This is going to be a backup car for the wife and I so it doesnt need to be anything fast or suped up. She drives a SC'ed Grand Prix and I have a Ram with a custom built 6.1 with 4.56s and 2 bikes. So all stock is fine

Welcome!
I agree with you 100% about used engines. With all the work involved in the install, you definitely don't want to have to re-do it anytime soon.
As you suspect, it's hard to say how involved a rebuild could become... Is there any chance the grandson might be interested in assisting you with the rebuild? It would probably make him feel better, and be a great learning experience as well!

Depending on how much work you can do, then the car may be a good deal if you can get it for a really good price. However, with that said, a blown motor will drastically reduce car value, so don't over pay.
