The 2005-2014 Ford Mustang and Mustang GT are impressive vehicles with a proven track record for durability, safety and speed. While this highly popular vehicle has faced some major recalls and other problems over the years, it is still one of the best rated vehicles on the market today, particularly when it comes to ride and handling. Here are some problems facing the Mustang as well as answers to some important questions related to these issues.

Common Problems

Center Console May Fail to Open

A number of problems have been reported among 2005-2014 Mustangs. The most prominent interior problems include an unresponsive center console, squeaky clutch pedal, and excessive steering wheel vibrations. Steering wheel vibrations are generally not associated with driving on unbalanced tires or at high speeds; in fact, moderate highway speeds of 60 to 70 mph could trigger the issue. Visit a local Ford dealer to have your vehicle inspected.

Module Issues

The 2005 Mustang has faced a number of Technical Service Bulletins (TSB) throughout the years. However, of the biggest areas of concern has been the electrical system. The air bag warning lamps, CD player and heater have all faced issues due to some faulty electrical components. Issues pertaining to the vehicle's power windows and power steering were also reported.

Massive Fuel Tank Recall

Ford Motor Company has issued a massive recall for faulty fuel tanks in 2015 Mustang vehicles manufactured between February 14, 2014 and February 10, 2015. Over 19,000 vehicles have been named in the recall. Vehicle owners are expected to receive written notification of the recall from Ford. All repairs will be carried out at absolutely no cost to the owner.

Expected recall repairs:

  • Fuel tank shield replacement.
  • Installation of a thermal patch to the fuel tank and parking brake cable.
  • Installation of thermal wraps to the fuel vapor lines.

Failure to have the above-mentioned recall repairs could result in serious damage to the fuel tank and/or fuel vapor lines.

Common Questions

What's the best way to reduce tint issues on a 2005-2014 Ford Mustang?

Your best option is to wash and wax your paint regularly and repair scratches and other surface damage as it occurs. It's recommended that you have your vehicle detailed at least once per year.

How do I prevent wear holes in my convertible top?

Your best option when it comes to convertible top care is using a high-quality cover when your Ford Mustang is not in use. It doesn't matter if you use a vinyl or fabric cover as long as you secure it properly. By securing it properly, you can help to protect your convertible top against rain, snow and sun as well as falling objects.

How often should I have my spark plugs replaced?

Have your spark plugs changed as they become damaged or faulty. Generally speaking, you should have your spark plugs inspected every 30,000 miles. If damage is present, have them replaced immediately. Faulty spark plugs have been a problem with 2005-2015 Mustangs.

Other Common Issues

Faulty Battery

If your battery becomes faulty while it is still under factory warranty, contact the manufacturer and have it replaced.

Malfunctioning Gas Tank

Some 2005-2014 Mustang owners have complained that their gas tank does not always fill up properly. In other words, the gasoline does not always reach the maximum capacity or the gasoline sputters out of the gas tank filler neck for no discernible reason. Some owners have observed that wiggling the gas pump while it is still positioned in the gas tank filler neck or reinserting the gas pump back into the gas tank filler neck may resolve the issue. It's recommended that you have your complete fuel tank system inspected by a licensed professional. Otherwise, you might notice a decline in gas mileage, as gasoline leaks or evaporates while you drive.

Rattling Noise

Rattling noises have been reported in the transmission, suspension and steering wheel. Have your vehicle inspected by a licensed professional. If your vehicle is still under factory warranty, your local Ford dealer will resolve the issue(s) at no cost to you.
