This article applies to the Ford Mustang V6 and Mustang GT (2005-2014).

The 2005-2014 Ford Mustang is a highly rated "pony" car that should be serviced according to your general maintenance schedule. While you could visit any automotive specialist for your major services, which should start at 30,000 miles, it's important to remember that your Ford dealer is specifically trained on how to extend the life of Ford vehicles and will be up-to-date on all technical service bulletins (TSBs) pertaining to your model year. Here is a rundown of the general maintenance you'll need to perform on your 2005-2014 Ford Mustang through the years.

Maintenance for 30,000 Miles or 36 Months

This is the point at which you or a licensed professional should be performing some very specific maintenance work on your Mustang. In addition to having your engine oil and filter replaced, you should also have a certified mechanic inspect your brake system, power steering system, as well as all your belts and hoses. Your cabin filter and fuel filter should also be replaced, as needed, and your differential fluid and brake fluid should be inspected for contaminants; change as needed. Generally speaking, you can expect to pay around $300 for your complete 30,000-mile maintenance.

Regular Intervals

The way to maintain your Mustang is by sticking to your regular maintenance intervals. For instance, you should continue to change your engine oil every 5,000 to 7,000 miles (or even every 3,000 miles, if you are an aggressive driver), flush out your major systems as needed, including your fuel tank, rotate your tires every 5,000 miles and check your spark plugs every 30,000 miles. Don't simply maintain your Mustang based on how many miles you travel; take into consideration your driving style and how long you've had each component (or current fluid) in your vehicle.

Preventative Maintenance for Cars over 100,000 Miles

The 2005-2014 was built to surpass the 100,000-mile mark. However, you'll need to go beyond your scheduled maintenance and actively inspect your major systems for wear and tear as well as excess buildup of contaminants. Here's a solid list of what you should be doing now:

  • Perform a coolant flush, which should include replacing the original coolant.
  • Replace the fuel filter.
  • Replace the fluids, including engine oil, brake fluid and differential oil; clean the engine using Seafoam engine treatment before adding new engine oil.
  • Inspect the serpentine belt and idler pulley.
  • Replace the spark plugs and wires.
  • It should not be necessary to replace the water pump or fuel pump until actual wear is detected.

Engine Maintenance

Make sure to replace the engine oil and filter as well as have the tires rotated and inspected every 5,000 miles or so. If you own a Cobra, and engage in recreational racing on the weekends, it's recommended that you replace the engine oil and filter every 3,000 to 5,000 miles.

  • Regular city and highway drivers could go up to 7,000 miles before needing to change their engine oil.
  • However, drivers would need to use a synthetic engine oil as well as avoid driving too aggressively.
  • Driving in stop-and-go traffic could also cause a regular driver to need an oil change every 5,000 miles.
  • To go up to 10,000 miles between oil changes, you would need to make highly frequent 10-mile one-way trips.
  • To be safe, aim for the 5,000-mile mark and monitor your engine oil, as needed, by checking the dip stick.

Common Questions
