1966 Ford Mustang Convertible Brings Back the Simpler Times

By -

This rare V8 4-speed Mustang drop-top provides a rewarding ownership experience that’s ‘something hard to let go of.’

When Greg Stanley found this gorgeous 1966 Ford Mustang convertible, he’d thought it was one of the extra-rare K-code HiPo 289 4-speed convertibles. After digging a bit, this Ford Mustang turns out to be a high-option A-code car, still a V8 but with a bit lower compression (among other differences). The ‘High Performance 289’ badges on the front corner, then, aren’t original to the car. They date back to 1966, though, and have been on the car longer than they’ve been off it, so Stanley keeps them around.

Stanley has since embarked on restoring his Mustang to be exactly what he wanted. With new floors, new torque boxes, and new rails, all of the rust was slowly taken out of the car. This ‘Stang was painted red at some point, meaning a complete bare-metal paint job was required, this time back to its original Ivy Green. The world has enough Candy Apple Mustangs, so this gorgeous dark green is a refreshing change. We love the color, how about you?

“Anyone who sees a car as just transportation from point A to point B, you’re missing this huge, exciting experience,” Stanley says. The great thing about Mustang ownership is that it comes in many different forms. Stanley uses his vintage Mustang as a frequent, but not every day, cruiser. We appreciate that as much as we appreciate the Mustang built for 9-second quarter mile passes. Love your Mustang and enjoy the ride, no matter what that may entail.

For anyone who has ever restored a car, you’ll be intimately familiar with the car owner’s sentiment when he says, “it’s a never-ending process, so there’s always a list of things to work on.” Having undertaken a few similar projects ourselves, we know that a car is never really done.
