1972 Mustang Mach 1

The story of this Mustang Mach 1 shows the incredible lengths people will go to help their families.

Life can be complicated. The ups and downs, the good times and bad times; they test our brains and our hearts. Such is the case with Floridian Clark Wilson, who walked into a Sarasota Ford dealership with his father in October 1971 and custom-ordered a 1972 Mustang Mach 1.

That’s where this emotional story begins, as highlighted in Ford Performance’s “Fan Spotlight.” Wilson didn’t just order any Mach 1, but a well-optioned dream machine.

The build featured Medium Bright Yellow paint, a 351 CJ with the factory Ram Air system, and a 4-speed tranny with a 3.50 rear gearHe also checked the boxes for power steering, power brakes, and air conditioning.

When it came to eye-candy, he opted for the swanky Deluxe interior, side stripes, factory hood pins, and Magnum 500 wheels. In all, it sounds (and looks like) an exquisite ride.

But again, life is full of twists and turns. Before Wilson’s father passed away, he requested that Wilson take care of his bed-ridden mother in his absence — and he gave his father his word. According to Wilson: “He asked that I would never allow Mom to go into a nursing home and that I would take her in to stay with me and my family. Being a man of his word about buying me the car, I gave him my word about caring for Mom.”

“I made a deal with Dad when I was a teen,” he said. “‘Work with me at the gas station for two years and learn about cars and how to work on them, and I will buy you a new car.’ So I worked alongside my Dad, who was an expert mechanic.”

Just like his father had kept his word, he kept his — which led to the sale of the Mach 1, his “best friend.” Due to the cost of his mom’s special medical needs, he listed it for sale in 1995 and found a buyer within a week.

After his mom passed away, Wilson became curious about his Mach 1. He began a nationwide search that turned out fruitless. In 2016, after scouting dealers, websites, and Mustang clubs, he thought he had found the one. As it turns out, he did. His beloved Mach 1 now lived in New York state.

Wilson says he would love to own his Mach 1 again. But as you can imagine, its value has gone up tremendously. He’s become friends with the current owner, who also wrote a letter to Ford Performance.

It’s an incredible story that’s too good not to share. On behalf of everyone at Mustang Forums, we wish Wilson the best of luck.
