Ford will roar into the current pony-car horsepower wars with the newest incarnation of the classic Shelby nameplate.

Some leaked photos in a Mustang6G forum topic appear to leak some first details on a new 2019 Shelby Mustang GT500. The photos show what looks like a supercharger intake plenum with a Cobra badge and an engine oil spec sheet for the 2020 model year with a supercharged 5.2-liter V8 on it.

A separate post on the same forum page shows massive brake rotors and Brembo calipers. These new photos follow several test-mule sightings earlier in the year.

While one photo does not a complete picture make, we figure Ford intends this new GT500 as a slayer of the Dodge Hellcat Widebody and Chevy Camaro ZL1 1LE. The Mustang lineup has lacked a GT500 since the 2014 model year. The GT350R and its sonorous flat-plane crank 5.2-liter V8 have filled the Shelby void in the interim.

The New Horsepower Wars

This comes at a time when the Mustang’s competition from Dodge and Chevy have pushed hard on production-car horsepower boundaries. Dodge’s Challenger Hellcat Widebody puts down 707 horsepower from a supercharged 6.2-liter HEMI V8. The Chevy Camaro ZL1 makes 650 horsepower from the supercharged 6.2-liter LT4 V8. Chevy also has added power to the forthcoming Corvette ZR1, which will make 750 horsepower.

Some rumors suggest Ford is targeting 800 horsepower for the GT500. That would suggest a full-blown engagement in the pony-car power wars. It might fall short of the drag-special Challenger Demon’s 840 horsepower, but we suspect the GT500 will also turn corners.

If you ever doubted that today is a good time to be a muscle car fan, the potential for many 600-plus-horsepower domestic car options should give you some hope.

Alright, MustangForums members, you’re up. Let’s hear what you expect from a brand-new GT500.
