2022 Ford Shelby GT500KR Gets 900HP
The GT and Mach 1 both saw a drop in power for 2022. But the folks at Shelby America aren’t playing that game.
When Ford released the specs on the 2022 Mustang GT and Mach 1 back in October, careful observers noted something interesting. For the first time since the 1970s, the current model cars were less powerful than the outgoing models, due to the encroachment of emissions regulations. Fortunately, not enough ponies went missing to matter, and the GT500 model — and its fantastic crate motor —rolled into the new model year with its output levels unchanged.
In fitting with their typical behavior, however, the mad scientists at Shelby America didn’t see fit to leave well enough alone. So for 2022, they decided to bring back the legendary King of the Road model, and give their fire-breathing version of the Blue Oval’s prized thoroughbred a bump in power. That means buyers who opt for the latest bit of kit from the Vegas-based builders won’t have to be satisfied with the anemic 760 horsepower of the stock GT500, or even the 800 horsepower output the 2021 Shelby-tuned version. Nope. For 2022 the Ford Shelby GT500KR will pack a whopping 900 horsepower.
The bump in power was achieved with the help of a bespoke 3.8-liter Whipple supercharger, and to ensure that the 5.2 liter supercharged mill doesn’t get too hot under the collar, there’s an upgraded intercooler, heat exchanger, and cold-air intake. There’s also a new carbon-fiber hood that appears to vent as much area as it covers, along with an updated front splitter and rear diffusor. According to Shelby America, the GT500KR’s magnetic ride settings have also been tweaked.
The new Shelby will ride on forged aluminum wheels (20×11 front, 20×11.5 rear), and also have a slew of available options including a wide body kit, a rear seat delete, a polished supercharger, and racing stripes. Of course, any of those would be on top of the $127,895 cost of a completed car or the $54,995 upgrade package for your current ride. If all that sounds interesting, Shelby will start taking orders in February, with deliveries following later in the year.
