While the S650 is the newest, shiniest pony car, there are many reasons why the S550 Mustang remains a better choice.

When the S650-generation Ford Mustang debuted for the 2024 model year, it did so to decidedly mixed reactions. After all, it isn’t very often that we’re treated to a redesigned Mustang, and there’s no denying that the S650 isn’t exactly a radical departure or a major leap forward compared to the outgoing S550 Mustang. Aside from mild exterior styling updates and more tech (as in screens), many were left wondering why, exactly, one might want to trade up for a new pony car.

Since then, the S550 Mustang has arguably only gotten more popular, as enthusiasts are realizing that the rather large price gap that exists between even gently used examples and a new S650 is too much to justify. However, there are several other reasons why one might want to buy an S550 Mustang over an S650, too.

1. Styling and Interior

While styling is always very much subjective, quite a lot of folks simply prefer the way the S550 Mustang looks compared to the S650. It’s a bit cleaner and more traditional on the outside, no doubt, which many prefer over the busier look of the newest pony car. On top of that, many aren’t fans of the S650’s giant screens, which look a bit tacked-on and can be distracting when compared to the more traditional – and subtle – layout in the S550.
