‘A Faster Horse’ Mustang Doc Should Get Your Ponies Running

It all starts in the design and development department, where the Mustang has been dreamed up for the last 50 years. The very first Mustang was designed in this very room.
So begins our journey into director David Gelb’s documentary, A Faster Horse, the inside story of the 2015 Ford Mustang.
Gelb’s last project, Jiro Dreams of Sushi, earned widespread critical praise, and his follow-up does not disappoint. If you’re a fan of excellent documentary film-making, this definitely qualifies. If you also happen to be a Mustang fan, consider this a warning: you may just break down and cry. Just watch the trailer below and tell me you’re not getting wispy.
Besides entree into the exclusive design and development studio and meeting rooms, we also hear from a number of Ford execs, then and now. You even hear from some of the folks involved with making the very first Ford pony car, like Gale Halderman, the designer of the original Mustang.
Of course, it’s impossible to talk about the latest generation, without talking about the ones that came before.
“We have a huge responsibility, to keep Mustang going in the direction that it needs to go, and yet at the same time, never forgetting where we came from,” says current Chief Program Engineer, Dave Pericak in the film.
Which pretty much sums up the trajectory of the documentary itself. From the sketchpad, to the computer, to the clay model, to the engineering, to the assembly line, to the marketing — you’ll learn a ton about the 2015 Mustang, and all the important ones before that.
A Faster Horse will make a one-night-stand in select theaters on Thursday, October 8th. Or you can pre-buy it now on Vimeo, or rent or purchase on Friday, October 9th.
