Trying to choose an exhaust system for the S550 Mustang is, well, exhausting. So, here are some tips from our resident experts.

Without question, the single most popular upgrade Mustang owners seek out is an aftermarket exhaust. This is especially true of the S550 Mustang, which unsurprisingly comes with a whole plethora of great options. But as you might’ve already figured out, the tone and loudness of each S550 Mustang aftermarket exhaust system varies greatly. Thus, plenty of folks, including Mustang Forums member Rory Nathan, tend to seek advice from our community of experts.

“So I want to buy a new exhaust system that is a little deep and throaty. I want to keep it legal with a converter, but also want the throaty deep sound. I’ve researched a lot so far but would like to hear some opinions from actual owners since I can only listen to videos. And once it’s on, I can’t really change my mind. I’ll be installing it with a buddy, so I only have to buy the pipes. Would like to spend as little as possible, but I won’t cheap out on my new toy. Thanks!”

When it comes to giving the S550 Mustang a deeper tone, lots of folks (including Spiderxkx) recommend Roush.

“I did an H-pipe resonator delete first and wasn’t too impressed. It made the exhaust note deeper but not that much louder, if at all. Then I added the Roush axle-back and what a difference it made! The exhaust note is exactly what I was looking for. A deep growl without much raspiness, and pretty loud when you get on it. Cold starts are pretty loud too, but I enjoy hearing it every single morning. So far the exhaust is my favorite mod on my car.”

Plenty of other members, including RugbyRef like the sounds of Magnaflow.

“I recommend taking a look at the Magnaflow cat-back Competition or Street systems. I have the Magnaflow X side chamber exhaust system and I really like the nice throaty (no rattle) sound at idle and when I get on the pedal.”

Then again, Corsa makes some pretty popular options for the S550 Mustang, including the Sport and Extreme. Sputnik775 went for the former.

“I’ve listened to a bunch, and so far found the Corsa cat-back Sport to be the happy medium for me.”

After all, it’s better to hear these kinds of things from actual owners than just watching tons of clips online.
