For years, the Mustang II has somewhat tainted the legacy of the Ford pony car, given the challenges it faced in the midst of growing oil concerns. But if there was ever a Mustang II poised to change the perception of the car, then this custom ’78 model could be it.

The Mustang, owned by Brett Behrens, has turned what many consider as a complete fiasco by Ford into one bad-ass machine, as highlighted in a Hot Rod article.

Dubbed as “Mustang Evolution,” the car began with a dream of a Mustang with V10 power, rear-mounted transaxle, 2005–2013 C6 Corvette suspension, and 50/50 weight distribution. And designer Ben Hermance was determined to help bring that dream to life.

After fine-tuning a series of concept drawings for the car, Behrens turned to Gordon Aram and his crew at A-Team Racing in Oregon, who went to work with a ’78 Mustang hatchback as the basic skeleton for the car.

The six-speed transaxle, torque tube, independent rear suspension, front suspension, and six-piston brakes were pulled from a wrecked 2008 Corvette Z06.

However, the engine was a project in itself, starting as a Triton 6.8L from a 2005 Ford truck that underwent a gang of modifications, including a custom equal-length intake, 90mm Accufab throttle-body, 50-lb/hr injectors, camshafts reground, and custom long-tube headers.

Coupled with all the extra design features, this is definitely one Mustang mod that’s well worth the entire read, which you can find here. So what do you think, does this car change your perception of the Mustang II?
