Classic Mustangs Recycled into Classy Watches

Wear a small piece of Ford Mustang history on your wrist.

Do you want a classic Mustang but it just isn’t practical because of your finances, or the size of your family, or your modern soul-sucking daily commute? Now a European watch company, has come up with a way to have at least a piece of a classic Mustang all the time, even if you don’t have a driver’s license.

Rec Watches in Denmark manufactures high-quality watches incorporating a face made from recycled Mustang body panels. This is not their first rodeo either, they have already done limited runs of other enthusiast models, such as the Porsche 911 and Mini Cooper. The P-51 Collection, named after the WWII Mustang fighter plane, is the first made from a classic American muscle car, and it has been getting lots of buzz online, including from Ford themselves.

As you can see, the face features a tiny riveted VIN plate, identifying the year and model the watch was made from, and includes the actual VIN the metal came from. Don’t worry, they only use parts from cars too far gone to restore; they can make up to 800 watches from the cast off parts of your old parts car. The dials are styled to be reminiscent of the gauges in the original pony car, with a speedo clock face, and odometer date indicator. Also, on these automatic mechanical watches, there is a fuel gauge that indicates when the spring is winding down.

For your $1,495, admittedly only middle-of-the-road pricing for what is meant to be a premium, high fashion, men’s timepiece, you not only get the watch, but also historical information on the wrecked car it came from. Rec Watches has a research department that tracks the VIN number back as far as possible, and makes a video documenting where your watch and the car that birthed it came from.

There are currently 3 different styles from 3 different Mustangs available in the P-51 Collection. Also in limited quantities are the 901 using the remains of a scrapped air cooled Porsche 911, and the Cooper and Mark I based on classic Mini Coopers. Coming soon there will be a very limited run of 250 timepieces in the P51 Mustang line, dubbed P51-04, this is from a Raven Black 1966 car, with a special dial and strap.

Admittedly, this is probably not the watch for a gearhead on a budget who could get a lot of mileage out of $1,500 in new car parts. But for the man who already has their car sorted out and needs a watch that matches their classic, rugged style, this may be perfect. We think it would also make an awesome gift for the man who has everything and loves his Mustang, if any of you wives or girlfriends need a hint.
