Dark Horse Mustang Pricing Revealed Along with Exclusive Paint and Interior Details
Thanks to its trick color-shifting paint, the Dark Horse Mustang will be the most visually distinctive Mustang in years.
Ford revealed the existence of the new Dark Horse Mustang when it debuted the S650 in September of last year. But while we know it’ll be packing a 500-horsepower 5.0-liter V8, along with go-fast goodies like a track-tuned MagaRide suspension, a beefier cooling system, and optional super-sticky Pirelli rubber, we were in the dark — so to speak — about what else was included in the trim. And now, we have more info about the current range-topper, both inside and out.
The most striking element is the exclusive Blue Ember metallic paint. Like the MystiChrome finish seen on the New Edge-era SVT Cobra, this trick finish changes color depending on the available light and the angle it’s viewed from. In the press photos, it looks positively wicked, though it’s tough to imagine the shots do it justice. At the moment, we don’t know exactly how much this will cost, but adjusted for inflation, the MystiChrome treatment was a $5,550 option.
Other Dark Horse-exclusive styling options will include two available stripe packages, a vinyl option, and a premium painted one. The vinyl option, seen on the red car (left, below), includes both Tarnished Dark and gloss black accents on the hood. Upgrading to the Appearance Package carries the theme onto the roof, as seen on the Blue Ember car (center, below). The top stripe package will feature hand-painted Tarnished Dark and black accents which stretch from the hood all the way to the rear spoiler (right, below).
Of course, the Dark Horse distinctions don’t stop with the exterior. To match the track-focused performance bits, there’s a flat-bottom steering wheel wrapped in grippy suede, and contrasting Bright Indigo Blue stitching on the seats, shift boot, door panels, and center console. The optional Recaro buckets feature suede inserts, along with Deep Indigo Blue bolsters to keep you planted in the chairs during hard cornering. In another cool touch, the seat belts are also Deep Indigo Blue.
But the coolest interior element is unquestionably the anodized blue titanium shift knob. In the pictures, it looks like a marble or a Brunswick bowling ball, and likely sparkles in a way that rivals the Blue Ember paint. Folks who opt not to get one of the last V8 sports cars available with a proper stick will have to make do with anodized silver shift paddles behind the wheel. Of course, there will also be a dash plaque featuring the chassis number of the car.
In the press release, Ford says to expect the Dark Horse to arrive at dealerships this summer. That said, given the excitement around this model, if you want a chance to get one at anywhere near the sticker price, you should have put in an order yesterday. The big remaining question about the Dark Horse is exactly how much it will cost, and while the Blue Oval hasn’t confirmed anything as of yet, leaked intel first reported by our friends at Ford Authority says it will come in at $57,970, or just $1,400 over the 2023 Mach 1.
