Ethanol-Sipping Fox Body Breaks the 8-Second Barrier in the Quarter Mile.

Ignite Racing Fuel recently hosted the Ethanol Nationals, a drag racing event featuring turbocharged cars battling for their share of a $10,000 purse. In the Street Racer class, a Ford Mustang driven by Rich Frost really stands out.

Frost’s Mustang starts to turn heads during practice, turning in quarter-mile times of 8.23, 8.41, and 8.11 seconds. What really makes people appreciate this vehicle, however, is that it’s powered by a Ford engine, as opposed to the Chevy LS engines frequently found in today’s Fox Bodies. With this full-blooded Ford dragster just getting warmed up, Frost knows he can break the 8-second barrier and get into the 7s.

Back in the pits, Frost gives us a behind the scenes look at his powerful creation. Don’t let the stock steering wheel fool you, this Mustang is tricked out. The lightweight Fox Body platform is the perfect home for the 352 cubic-inch small block dishing out 1300 horsepower. With this much power and a race-proven Fox Body platform, it’s easy to understand Frost’s confidence.

On race day, Frost wastes no time reaching his mark. During his first testing run, the car performs flawlessly, turning in a quarter-mile time of 7.99 seconds at a blistering 174.44 mph. It’s the first-time Frost has cracked the 7-second mark. Despite this uncharted territory, he thinks he can do better.

But after several more tries, Frost can’t top his record time. He eventually turns in a disappointing performance against a Chevy Firebird. Yes, the ending is anticlimactic, but check out the vid below to see this thoroughbred Mustang run wild in all its glory.
