How-To Spotlight: Manual Transmission Burnouts

By -

If you want to roast your tires in a manual transmission car, watch this video.

You’ll want to begin any good burnout with a hearty shout of, “Hey man, watch this!” Once you’ve got that covered, you can focus on the actual brake stand. If you’re driving a torqueless wonder like the Honda S2000 in the video above, find a smooth surface like your garage floor (maybe spray it down with a little WD40 beforehand for easier traction break) and get started.

Now, just rev up the engine the right amount — too high and you’ll cook the clutch, too low and you’ll look like a fool when you stall. Then sidestep that clutch pedal like you’re line dancing.

Once you’ve popped your foot up off the clutch pedal, immediately move it over to the brake pedal and give just enough of a squeeze to keep the car standing still while you create some smoke. The throttle might take a little modulation to keep things running smoothly, but once you’re there, that’s the easy part. Maybe give your buddies a nice long “yeehaw” to acknowledge the ridiculousness of your shenanigans.

Not necessarily, though, as a burnout or brake stand is actually great for drag racers, and this video shows just why that is. By instigating a burnout, you can really pump up the temperatures, and thus the grip threshold, of your rear tires. With more grip, you can get a better launch off the line, leading to a better elapsed time down the quarter-mile.

Of course, if you’re driving an S550 Mustang GT, just use the line lock feature. It’ll make all of this so much easier.
