#TBT: Mach 1 Pronounced “Mach Won!” in Vintage ‘70s Ad

Here’s a classic Mustang throwback ad that I imagine some might find pretty entertaining now.

Then again, I’m sure there were a lot of people who thought the ad above was funny in the seventies, back when it ran in an issue of Motor Trend. After all, we’re pretty certain that was the point. We just can’t imagine that there has ever been anyone who didn’t know how to pronounce “Mach 1,” and would require an explanation that it’s “pronounced-Mach Won!”

Although, in this new digital age, where we abbreviate everything, the “1” could get lost in some crazy translation, especially with a hashtag added.

Still, it’s clear here that the bigger message with the “Mach 1 – pronounced-Mach Won!” tag was to highlight the Mustang’s winning ways in the 1969 SCCA Manufacturer’s Rally Championship, which included 8,000 miles of rally racing.
