You’ll Be Surprised How Fast Fox Cobras Were in 1993

Limited to 5,000 units, and nearly $20,000, Fox Body Cobra brought muscle and handling to a dated chassis.

Back in 1993, GM had just unleashed updated versions of their F-chassis cars, immediately upping the ante in the Pony Car wars. Ford responded with a glorious send off for the Fox body cars, the Cobra and Cobra R.

While the R (for racing) version was quickly snapped up by a combination of racing teams, amateur racers, and speculators, the standard Cobra was immediately available for folks to prowl the mean streets. This no nonsense MotorWeek review of the top-tier Mustang street car takes the Cobra to task for its relatively mundane looks, but praises the hopped-up engine and stellar suspension revamp. Twenty-five years later (can you believe it’s been that long?) and we wouldn’t dare call it mundane anymore.

With MotorWeek‘s traditional dry delivery, the car gets a complete and thorough review in just six and a half minutes. Compared to most modern automotive review videos with gorgeous locales, flashy graphics, and fancy slo-mo shots, this one just focuses on the job at hand. It delivers the content you need to know in order to get on with your day. We continue to be so happy that MotorWeek posts these Retro Reviews to their YouTube channel. We could listen to John Davis spout statistics in his iconic, lilting cadence all day. Even the worst car in the world would receive his praise for inclusion of a voltage and oil pressure meters on the dashboard.

With the Mustang kicking around the offices in a beautifully sunny East Coast winter day, they got some great shots of the car doing its thing back lit against a sheet of the white stuff. The leafless trees are strikingly bleak in comparison to the Mustang’s shouty shade of red paint. From start to finish, we love this entire video, and implore you to watch it as well.
