Mustangs Throw Down at Oklahoma Street Drag Event

By -

Amid a field of Generals and Mopars, a few Mustangs lay down the times and the law during day-long local street drag event.

Oklahoma has got a lot of things going for it. There’s the rivalry between Oklahoma State and the University of Oklahoma on the football field. There’s the time it was the setting for the oddly sentient tornadoes of the 1996 cult classic filmĀ Twister. There’s wrestling commentator legend Jim “Good Ol’ J.R.” Ross, who calls Norman his home. And of course, we can’t forget there’s a whole musical about the wind sweeping down the plains of Oklahoma.

You can now add smokey burnouts from Mustangs to the list of awesome Oklahoma things. YouTube channel Urban Hillbilly Videos recently captured the tire-smokin’, engine-roarin’ action of Mustangs facing off against a few Chevys, Caddys, and a Mopar or two during a day of legal street drag racing in Hartshorne, Oklahoma.

Following the first heat between old and new GM, the second heat featured a mostly blue Fox-body Mustang with turbo-boosted LSX power versus a Ford Raptor. Once the white light went up, so did any chance the Raptor would beat the Mustang, the latter putting tons of distance between it and and the doomed dino-truck.

After another heat of Chevy power, it was time for this pair of hot and cold Fox bodies to go at it. Turns out the red hot Mustang wasn’t hot enough, lagging behind the turbocharged blue Mustang as it squealed all the way to a superstar finish.

Another red vs. blue matchup, this time featuring an LSX-powered New Edge Mustang GT versus an untitled New Edge Cobra. Alas, the Cobra was the one bitten by the turbocharged GT “by about a bunch,” according to the track announcer.

Another heat later, it was time for a pair of white leviathans to take the line. The nitrous-boosted Fox-body Mustang blew the Cadillac CTS-V Coupe out of the water so hard it needed to use its parachute to bring it back to earth. The parachute re-packed, the Mustang returned to battle a Chevy Malibu Wagon, leaving it in the dust like “a fat kid in dodgeball.”

One by one, the field whittled itself down to a final few. Once again, the nitrous ‘Stang returned, this time against one of the blue ‘Stangs from earlier on. The match was close, with the blue Mustang having the upper hand (and the better burnout), but the white leviathan caught up and beat the devilish blue pony to the line. Meanwhile, another blue Mustang fell victim to a red Chevy Nova in the last semi-final, proving that Mustangs can’t win ’em all.

But they can win the one that counts. In the final matchup of the day, our hero goes up against the red Chevy, blasting off the line with a time of 9.18 before deploying its parachute to come back down to earth to claim its prize and bragging rights. All in all, just another glorious day for the Ford Mustang.
