Ford Mustang Fox Body build

Hundreds of hours of work made this restored Fox body build really stand out.

Clean builds are something we really appreciate here at Mustang Forums, and this 1991 Ford Mustang GT built by graphic designer and car enthusiast Eric Armstrong is one of the best we’ve come across.

It’s nice when you have the opportunity to complete someone else’s project, but at the same time, you never know what state of “complete” that car might be. For this car, it was tired and “well used.” Passing through three owners before falling into Armstrong’s possession meant it was ready for a restoration. Hours were spent on bringing the faded paint back to life, and the interior was thoroughly refreshed with new carpeting and proper racing seats to replace the cracked leather originals.

Mechanically, the car was all there, however after years of abuse as an auto-cross racer had taken their toll. Drive-line refreshments included a new clutch and completely new rear end, but at Armstrong notes, several other things needed attention. “I wanted to get the car running and driving reliably. This included an extensive list of replacements including a water pump, timing cover, injector o-rings, fuel pressure regulator, upper intake manifold, brake rotors and pads, and other miscellaneous gaskets, seals, and sensors.”

Still Developing

Fox platform build

Still described as being in the “modification stage,” Armstrong has done his own modifications and improvements to the Fox body, in order to put his own unique touch on it, and continue using it at auto-cross and track day events. To help with the lateral G-forces, KYB shocks and struts are paired with additional chassis bracing, and the final point of contact is Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires on 18 inch replica Saleen SC Motorsport wheels. A cold air intake with larger throttle body helps the induction side and shorty headers route exhaust through a custom H-pipe setup. Gearing has been aided by a 3.55:1 final drive with limited slip differential in there for good measure. SVE Cobra disc brakes keep all that speed in check.

An Artist’s touch

As a designer, Armstrong also wanted to put his own touch on the car, and subtle but effective visual improvements are part of the appeal. A Saleen wing and Capri tail lights complete the rear of the car but up front you’ll find clear headlights and custom “EA” fog light covers.

Considering the passion and work put into this build, and how Armstrong plans to keep using it, it easily stands out as one of our favorites. We can’t wait to see it at more car shows.
