Shelby GT350 Honored as a 2016 Car of the Year, But Should It Be?

I’m sure most here won’t have a problem letting me know if I’m being a little over-dramatic here. But should a vehicle that undergoes a major recall actually be honored as a car of the year?

Or, does the fact that the car is one as popular as the Shelby GT350 allow a mag as venerable as Car & Driver to overlook that kind of detail?

Now, keep in mind, I’m a huge fan of the Shelby GT350 myself. It’s just that I’m having a hard time swallowing the idea that it’s earned a spot on C&D’s 10 Best Cars of the Year list after a stop-sale order was issued for a faulty engine component, which could potentially lead to a fire.

Of course, it’s important to note that Car & Driver’s 10 Best list consists of a variety of real-time performance tests, which we’re sure the Shelby lived up to in spectacular form. I’m also fully aware of the fact that these days, automotive recalls are about as common as speeding tickets on the highway.

Still, it does make you wonder if recalls are becoming so run-of-the-mill that they no longer draw the same concerns that they did years ago. If so, that certainly would explain why so many consumers tend to ignore those notices when they come in the mail.
