The Perfect Fox Body to Go Drifting?

— By Justin Banner
I’ve been involved with drifting for over seven years now as media, so I’ve gotten a wide variety of views on how to build a drift car thanks to in-depth feature car articles, talking to drivers, and watching them drift. Being a Ford fan at heart, I’ve always wanted to build a Fox Body Mustang to go drifting. Here is what I would recommend if I were to build one right now.

The first thing I’d do is purchase a grip box. If the grip box’s sub-frame connectors aren’t Formula Drift legal, I’m wouldn’t be worried about it. I’d just get one to have some fun while drifting and the flex-y chassis between the sub-frames won’t do. I’d also opt for a K-member package to get rid of that stamped steel K-member, though I would tell them that I already have the camber plates from the grip box.

My tire of choice would be the Nitto NT555 in 225/45/R18 all around, as it not only provides great trip, but actually will have some life in it for longer runs. The narrow 225mm will also not require me to have stupid amounts of power to go drifting, so basic bolt-ons, a pair of Cobra/Explorer heads and intake, and headers to the 5.0 Liter controlled by an upgraded ECU would be all I need so long as I can reach 300 horsepower.
