Virtual Reality Makes Actual Roush Stage 3 Drifting Even Cooler

Virtual Drift Roush Stage 3

What could be cooler than drifting a Roush Stage 3 Mustang? How ’bout drifting one while wearing a virtual reality visor that blocks out the real world and creates a new one full of falling bridges, jettisoning rock formations, and lasers? Whoa. That’s cool.

It seems out of this world, and potentially hazardous, but as you can see in the latest Castrol EDGE Titanium Trial video below, Formula Drift pro, Matt Powers, covers his eyes with an Oculus Rift headset, blind himself to reality, and goes drifting through a virtual world of crazy in an actual world Roush Stage 3 Mustang.

Fortunately, the mad scientists who engineered this stunt had plenty of open space to work with, seeing as Powers isn’t so much driving a steel torpedo as he is playing with one.

“The virtual world is pretty crazy. There’s kind of these mountain shapes in it, there’s tunnels, there’s bridges, there’s weird tracks, there’s obstacles that are dynamic and coming at you and moving. It’s pretty crazy,” says Powers in the behind-the-scenes video at the bottom of the page.

And then they throw Ken Block’s Ford Fiesta into the virtual mix too, just to make things all the more crazy.

The coolest thing about this whole experiment, though, is the fact that the Roush Stage 3 looks just as beautiful in the real world as it does in the virtual one. And that’s saying something, ’cause this stunt is really freaking cool.
