Video: Virtual Test Drive of a Built ’66 Mustang
Clear your head with a nice drive in the country with eight cylinders, six gears, and two chromed exhaust pipes.
All we want to do right now is get out and drive. There’s a lot going on right now, and for us, there’s no better way to clear our head.
Maybe you’re like us, and if, for whatever reason, you can’t dust off your Mustang and go for a spin, we’ve got you covered. This virtual test drive in a built ’66 Mustang Fastback is the next best thing.
Right now, this car is for sale at Maple Motors in Hendersonville, Tennessee. From the outside, it may look like your average fastback. Under the skin, though, it’s packing a built motor and a modern 6-speed manual transmission. Let’s go for a ride.
Our host, Nick, sums it up well. “It’s a very, very sharp car.” The red paint, chrome, and even the styled steel wheels all sparkle despite the cloudy, overcast weather in the video. The white side stripe and fog lights are the perfect finishing touches on the outside.
Inside, you’ll find a tuxedo Pony interior. It’s clear that this car was recently restored, and from here, it looks terrific. It sounds pretty great, too.
Second-Hand Driving Impressions
There’s definitely a hot cam in that Windsor small block under the hood. The idle burbles and rumbles in the parking lot, and we could listen to it all day long. When he takes off, the driver exclaims “She spun a bit just leaving the lot!”
That high-performance powerplant sounds even better under load. This is one serious fastback. The driver states that the engine has great throttle response, and the six-speed transmission ensures that you’re always in the powerband.
This classic Mustang is more than just a pretty face, though. It’s got a pair of cupholders and air conditioning installed. With a police officer creeping up behind, our host sticks the car into sixth gear and just lets the engine’s idle carry it along right at the speed limit. He quips, “There’s your fuel mileage, right there.”
If we were to build ourselves the early fastback of our dreams, this would come pretty close. We dig the traditional look inside and out, with a real monster and a modern transmission underneath. We may not have the $42,900 asking price saved up in our piggy bank, but we enjoyed coming along for the ride.
