....many will say that the car will look awkward unlowered and with 20s.... so you should lower it.

Heres a picture of my friends 20 inch foose nitrous's

hes lowered wtih a eibach coil overs I think...IMO they look great...
...they better be great for 450 a wheel :-o + 4 250 dollar tires.
I love his car.

Tire size for rubbing is what counts, not the wheel size. The stock tires are 27 inches in diameter. If you mount 30+inch tires on the 20 inch rims then you are going to have issues not to mention throwing your speedo off. One issue is if you have 20 inch open wheels and stock brakes. The air gap between the brakes and the wheels can give it a bit of a bicycle tire appearance.

As for rubbing - 20 inch wheels and lowered (no rubbing to include hi-speed and hi-g corneringon a race track):

The bottom line is the tire size and offsets/widths of the rims. My 05 came from the dealer with the Saleen racecraft suspension and the Saleen 20's on it. No issues whatsoever. Except the price of the 20" tires when it's time to replace them...

I think I can help here!
We have 2 S-197s. In these pics BOTHMustangs have the same BFG KDW2 tires 255x35x20 in front and 285x30x20 in rear, both Mustangs have 20x9 rims in front and 20x10 inrear. The yellow Mustang is lowered with Eibach Pro Spring kit (and lots of other suspension mods not to be named, but doesn't effect height) and the black Mustang has stock suspension(in these pics) I think one can see whywe lowered both cars.
And yes I know I'm missing lug nuts as my 'after market' locking lug nuts bottom out on the stud before the tightened up on the rim!!! [:@]
