and i know these are mainly german and asian cars but i think its a cool look. plus, i've never seen it on a mustang and thought it might be a litte different.

It will look like a glassback (mine is glass).

If you are going to do this, do it correctly. Does your friend who can do it pretty cheap have experience with this work? Back when the factory installed vinyl roofs, there were quite a few cases of water working its way between the vinyl and the metal. People wound up with bubbling vinyl and rusted metal.

I found a guy who would sell me the vinyl for $40 and put it on for $20. He has his own vinyl company so I think he'll be able to apply it correctly. The advantage of vinyl over paint is its less work, probably cheaper, and you can always pull it off whenever you want. I'll post pics when I can
