Default Think I'm about ready for new rims....but

After reading every ****ing post on this forum and looking at every picture possible (i think), I think I've made my choice on rims. I think its gunna be the Chrome FR500's for my Black '06 GT.

The problem I'm having is a common problem on this forum. 18's or 20's.

I don't want this to be a discussion about the merits of either as it has been throughly discussed (I know after 10000posts on wheels)

Here's the question.....How much does the design of the rim dictate the size?

I mean, a Bullit wheel would look silly in 20" because they NEED a beefy tire, but a Razor or a Saleen would look silly in 18" because a beefy tire doesn't suit them. IMHO

I guess I'm worried about the 18's looking too small, but I'm also worried that the 20's won't have enough sidewall. For me it's not about the size, it's about getting the car to flow well.

So the real question is, not what size I should get, but what size is right for the FR500's?

In my massive search for pics, I didn't turn up many FR500's in 20's in chrome. Anyone got those? pics?

I've seen the FR500's in black chrome on a silver stang and they were 18's. They looked really nice. Have not seen them in 20's though. I don't think they would look ridiculous in 20's either.

I think these are 20's.. if that car was dropped it would look better.

I understand your pain with looking at thousands of posts about wheels. I did this myself all last month. I changed my mind several times as I found out choices I made were out of stock, cost too much to ship etc... In the end I found wheels I love.

Size? For me it was 18's all the way. 20's cost you too much in power loss. That just too much rotating mass. My car is a muscle car. Its a car I burn rubber in, I punch it around corners, I spin the tires going into second, I race it at the track. Define your car. Its art....no right or wrong, just what turns you on. As far as wheel design.... just pick the one that suits your personality.

Here is a pic of my beast with my new wheels.

to be honest, i think 18" is best on these cars.

not that 20" looks bad, but i like a little meat on my tires

A 17 or an 18 that weighs less than 20 pounds is the way to go IMO.

I had this same problem. After asking for pix of cars w/20's on them, shopping the heck out of 20" wheels, etc. etc. I have to admit, I'm back to wanting my next set of wheels to be 18's. I like the stock stance, can't lower mine anyway due to structural integrity issues, and I prefer a little more 'go' to 'show' in this particular car. My 91 is a 'show' car, think I'll make the 06 GT a 'go' car. *nods*

As 808 said, define your car, and in IMO, you won't go wrong with your choice, no matter what it ultimately is.

I think 808 said it right. Do what makes YOU happy. Not everyone likes everything and thats what makes cars unique. And he's not kidding about biggers wheels robbing power. I run 19" Saleens and I took them off yesterday for the winter and put my stock 17's back on. It feels like I picked up 15hp! lol. Might keep that in mind. I dont personally race so I dont care, but if YOU do.......

I'm with Joolander but think that 16's with more sidewall and RWL's will be my next wheel/tire combo.

The FR500's look somewhat similiar to the GT500's. IMO, these wheels need sidewall. And also IMO, 20's can look hideous; wagon wheels with rubber bands for tires. But that's just MY opinion.

Thanks for the replies. I just want a big "looking" rim, I don't really care if it's 18,19, or 20. I laugh to myself because I used to have an altima with 18's on it. They looked really small on the altima and I always wanted 19s or 20s. 18's on a mustang appear relatively bigger....don't know why that is, but they do, and I think that 18's do look nice.

This statement helps a lot. I want the tires to look right on the wheel and the wheel with the car. Like I said before....Bullits in 20's would look dumb, so I don't want to get 18's in the FR500's and then say "ah man they definately woulda looked better in 20's".

I am with Joolander and Nuke, but it really comes down to YOUR peference. Buying wheels can be a tough decision as I went round and round with plenty of researching. And even after all that time, still not 100% happy with my CS69s... but then again, I am old school and really prefer a lot of rubber. Unless you can find the exact wheel and tire combination on the same color/height car as yours, it is still a tough decision.

I might even go this route
