My first attempt at making a Car Show Display

Nice. I'd also tone down the drop shadow under the car. The best way to handle the shadow is to just use the shadow that's actually in the untouched photo (as seen in your sig) as a guide. Trace the shape of the shadow in the pic and fill it with black in the layer under the car. Natural instinct is to just blur the heck out of the shadow, but as you can see in the reference photo the light source (in this case, the sun) isn't casting softer shadows, it's actually pretty well defined. All you need to do is bring down the opacity of the shadow to probably 10-20%.

That does look better. The font is still a little difficult to read, but possibly because of that silver in the background.
I agree with the opacity of the shadow under the car. Would lower it a bit more.
Maybe soften the edges of the flames some, give it a little more natural feel, though the post above mentioned, the name does get a bit lost in those flames.
Pretty good job so far

I also notice on second inspection that it looks like you also added an emboss to the text in addition to the drop shadow. I'd lose that. On a font that weight it's just making it harder to read.
I will give you a general bit of advise for someone who's learning photoshop. It's cool to check out all the different tutorials you can find online, and play with all the bells and whistles. Thing is though, it's easy to get caught up in the "Wow" factor. Doesn't always make for good design. Think: all the movies that used that stupid "bullet-time" after the Matrix came out. It's good to know how to do that stuff, but doesn't mean it's always appropriate.

I can see how easy it is to get carried away with things.... the shadow I think I shaded around the car.... but not on a different layer, so now I am lost as to get rid of it!!
Sometimes it is best to go with the old saying of "less is more"!! I just can't help myself and end up button bashing and doing too much!!
