Default Drivers Airbag

Has anyone removed and or replaced the cover on the drivers side airbag? I changed the center emblem on mine and I am not satisfied with the results. I have found a replacement cover, and I have had the unit out of the steering wheel, but I am unsure as to how hard it is to change the cover and I do not want to risk several hundred dollars experimenting. My airbag is still functional.

I replaced the Cover on mine. The airbag was deployed, instead of buying a $600 Airbag kit, I bought a $75 Cover.

Disconnect the Battery first!

There are 2 bolt access covers on either side of the back of the spokes on the steering Wheel. Pop those off and remove the 10mm bolts holding the air bag in. Be careful to gently remove the AirBag Wires. Mine were melted in from the heat of the deployment, but otherwise if you damage them, the airbag light might stay on.
Once the Airbag is out, there are 3 rivots holding the cover on the airbag. Drill those off and the cover should come off. You'd need to find bolts small enough to replace the new cover that doesn't interfere with the airbag.

Hoope this helps!

Thanks for your input. I have looked at that, the problem is that yours was deployed so you had no worry about messing it up. I am wanting it to be functional when I get through so I would like to hear from someone who has actually put the bag back inside.

Ok, I rolled the dice and took mine apart and it is not too big a deal, you just have to be slow and careful! Where did you buy your replacement cover and is it a Ford part or aftermarket? I bought one on ebay from some outfit in Houston that was aftermarket and it was a waste of money! The thing might work if you are removing the bag, but even then it was so shabby that I would not put it in a wrecked car, much less one that I want people to look at.
