Default color matching question: is black difficult

Hey gang,

I've got a black '03 Cobra that I want to remove the front license plate bracket. This removal will leave behind four holes in the bumper that will need to get filled and the bumper repainted. I also have a few paint chips in the hood that I would also like to have taken care of.

My questions is this: is black a hard color to match? My concern is that if the hood and/or the bumper are going to be tough to match to a 8 year factory paint job - because black is inherently tough to color match - I may just leave well enough alone and throw a Ford Racing plate on the front or something.

I know some colors are harder than others, but wanted to get some feedback. Thanks!

Who's the moron that told you that black was tough to match?!?!
It's the easiest color to do period! As long as it's straight black like our Mustangs (and most cars out there).
Do yourself a favor, don't believe anyone saying anything different, even if they tell you that the sky is blue!

As long as your clear coat is in good shape, you're OK.
Black is the only color that will match for sure because well... black is black. lol.

No one said anything, lol.

Just trying to gather information before I begin my search for a shop. I have very little experience with auto painting, so I didn't know what is involved in matching an 8 year factory paint. My assumption is there are certain colors that are easier than others, but I didn't know which were which.

But, its sounds like black should be no sweat.

I see the error of my ways... there's an "if" absent from my post. should be:

...because *if* black is inherently tough to color match...

I though your post was funny because black is a straight shot.
The light and medium metallic colors are always the worst.
Tungstene gray in particular, when it comes to our Stangs...
I never been really lucky with that color, everything has to be blended.

Anyway, make sure you get a descent shop for the job.
Good luck.

I am pro painter...Black is black....Nobody will ever see difference. However to get technical, if you shoot a straight black toner, it will be slightly darker and vibrant.

Mustangs use code UA...PPG UA ask that you add alittle bit of yellow and white into there pure black toner

But if you paint it with straight black toner, you cannot tell the difference unless you get right on it, you will be able to slightly tell...

As far as blending, you can use any black paint and it will work. What i say only applies if you were to paint panel to panel

I didn't move it because it applies to our cars as well.

big401, you're right and in the end, black is still black.
Also, cheap clear coats will play a trick on matching colors since they're yellowish to begin with.
Bad news for white tints...
