The absolute first thing is to paint the valve covers, I don't know why everyone doesn't do this. The stock ones take on a streaky black appearance and look terrible. You can either do it yourself, or have someone powder coat them. I had mine coated gold, like the first mustang 289 engines and they look great. Start searching for threads on engine bays, there are some folks here with awesome custom paint jobs.

cleanliness is the most important thing when showing your engine bay.
my engine really doesn't have any bling things except the strut tower caps.
but it is very clean.
dont go overboard with engine bling to the point where its tacky.
and keep one theme when doing color or stainless steel. dont do different things that make it clash with other things under the hood.
hood struts are a basic mod that is really nice too.
i dont like it when engines are overdone. clean and mean is what i like.

onederful, what do you use on the black parts, like the coolant tank? No matter what I use, I can't seem to keep my looking black, mine seems rough, and grimey. (And yes I detail the engine bay regularly)

it doesn't last long looking shiny, but it remains pretty clean looking. i've also tried F21 turtle was dressing which was good too, and some wet tire dressing.
the tire dressing lasts the longest and shines the most, but has an oily look that i dont like.
i like the water based interior dressing bc its not oily and just has a clean look to it.
i think the heat from the engine makes the dressing not last too long.
that helps too. LOL.

It also depends on your car color as darker shades (like with my Alloy) need some additional contrast IMO, which is why I plated my tanks and went with blue couplers and covers.
