The book calls for 5W20 syn. Many people believe this is due to tighter tolerances, gas mileage etc. What type of climate do you live in ? Do you drive your car in winter ?
Let me know and we can go to the next step on brands.

What he said.

I live in the south where increased temps make oilburn an issue. I run Royal Purple 10W-30

?????????????? The temp needs to reach 300 degrees to begin to burn your oil.
The climate question is in regards to start up in cold weather.

The thicker oil, at least in the theory of the mechanics I spoke with (when I said 5W-20? HUH?!) is that the thicker oils will have more protection to offer and, since I'm in no danger of freezing weather, I don't need the lighter (riskier) oils.

As for why I choose RP, it's simple. More addatives (more protection) and more power. ^_^

GGIII:: Better read up on oil..... also you can have warranty issues by not using the mfg recommendations..

More power? Is that due to less weight in your wallet. Really though, do you really belive that RP will show more RWHP over any other premium 5-20. If it does I'll start using it..

HERE, is how this works............... 5W20 is known as "multigrade" oil. It has the viscosity of 5 at 0 degrees, and the viscosity of 20 at operating temperature (usually around 180 - 200 degrees) The "W" means winter. Multigrade oils came about to protect engines at cold weather start up. The thinner the oil, the quicker it gets to your heads, valve train, cam and cyl walls.
80% of engine wear occurs in your driveway and the first 5 miles driven daily, as the car has sat 8-10 hrs, with the oil draining back to the CC.
All the car manufacterers spec a "multigrade" as they have NO control as to where the car is at in winter months. (Miami of Green Bay) HOWEVER, a 5 viscosity is good for any car, as it gets to vital engine parts quicker even at 90 in the shade weather, THERE is NO DANGER in using 5W20 or 30 in any climate, contrary to what GGIII says.
The higher the viscosity, the less horsepower, because your oil pump robs horsepower to pump thicker oil.
If you drive only at say,........ 50 degrees or higher, you can choose a straight 20 or even 30 viscosity which will protect that 481cu very well.
I welcome replys regarding this.
