GTO = Grande Tourismo Osmogoto (spelling probably wrong) = Grand Touring Machine
Close. As I recall it was actually Gran Turismo Omologato, and it was an italian phrase referring to a Grand Touring class vehicle that was "homologated" for racing purposes....

there were all sorts of articles a couple of years ago on the origination (and rebirth) of the name of the pontiac version of the marque. Ferrari may still use it...which makes the trademark value rather questionable.....
