Default OCTANE ADVISE

i HAVE BEEN RUNNING 93 IN MY 05 W/TUNE. RUNS GREAT AND FEELS GREAT. NOW THAT GAS IS CLOSE TO $3.25 A GALLON, I HAVE JUST RE-TUNED TO 89. STILL RUNS AWESOME.

MY QUESTIONS IS: DOES THE DIFFERENT OCTANE LEVELS REALLY MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN PERFORMANCE. I KNOW A GUY THAT IS BEEN IN THE AUTO SERVICE BUSINESS FOR 20 YEARS AND HE TOLD ME, EVEN WITH THE RE-TUNE FROM STOCK(SCT), RUNNING HIGHER OCTANE IS A WASTE OF MONEY. THE ENGINE'S COMPRESSION ISN'T HIGH ENOUGH TO WARRANT THE HIGHER OCTANE'S, THAT THE ENGINE IS DESIGNED TO RUN ON 87 AND THAT HIGHER OCTANE'S MAY CAUSE IT TO CARBON UP.

ANY INPUT ON OCTANE'S AND PERFORMANCE??

It has to do with aggressive timing and detonation, an engines enemy. No ping, no prob basically.

If you tune for 89 then 89 is fine, if you tune for 93 then you need to use 93, compression has nothing to do with why you would need 93 in this case, it's timing, much more aggressive than with lower tunes. You won't carb up the motor using 93 if you've tuned it for this gas.

You're mechanic has zero understanding of the new Mustang, have him do some reading on the Spanish Oak processor and how the engines get tuned for different octane levels. If you use a 93 tune but put in 89 you WILL have issues with detonation/ping.

I'd be interested in talking with this guy, have him sign up to the forum!

The octane rating of a fuel has NOTHING to do with gaining horsepower other than the fact that (as others have said) the higher octane allows you to run more advanced timing while preventing the detonation that would normally occur with the same. 89 tune with 93 gas will do nothing but drain your budget, foul your engine and make it run like crap. 93 tune with 89 gas will ping like crazy and detonate as much. Soon it will blow given the right (bad) conditions.

I HAVE BEEN USING THE CORRECT OCTANE WITH THE TUNE, BUT HE MADE ME THINK THAT IT WOULDN'T MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE(PERFORMANCE WISE) USING THE 93 OCTANE FUEL/TUNE VS. 89 OCTANE/TUNE.
