Default Front Brake Calipers Discoloring

I just noticed that my front brake calipers have seem to have become discolored. I could swear that the entire caliper assembly was a silvery-gray or aluminum looking color when I brought the car home. Now it seems that the center part, shaped like a C and holds the brake pad on, has become a dull white color. Anyone have this going on? Or was the stock one always this white-ish color?

Ideas on why this happened? [sm=WTFsgign.gif]

My thoughts: Heat? OR maybe the last time I got my car washed something was applied to the wheels (however, I have no wheel damage at all, painted surfaces are all perfect)?

Mine are like that too. I drove mine through the winter so I don't know if salt had anything to do with my discoloration. And I can't get them clean for the life of me. I am going to paint mine with caliper paint. Then they will be easier to clean and take care of. (I already have a car that has painted brake calipers and they still look awsome).

Well I'm in California so no salt down here in the OC. That counts that part out. Really odd. I swear that they were a nice silver color until a couple of days ago. I'm thinking that the paint they had on there originally discolored due to heat in the caliper.

Anyone else?

Same with mine. It gives me a good reason to paint 'em.

Hey TorchRed, Any ideas on why they discolored? If we all live in different areas, and use different stuff to wash our cars, etc....it has to be something about the caliper itself that makes it turn such a crappy looking dull white.

And there are places on each caliper that have darker or lighter spots on them.

If I'm not mistaken, the silver is actually paint. If it is paint, it's just a case of crappy paint not being able to stand up to the heat.

Mine look exactly like you discribed. So it's not salt, and I don't take my car to carwashes so it can't be that....
I give up. In a couple of weeks they will be painted so I wont have to look at them.

Yea, they are painted silver. I grinded mine down just a bit so that I wouldn't have to use wheel spacers and the grinded part is now solid rust. I'm painting them soon though so I'm not too worried about it.

Sounds like bad paint used on the assembly. Make sure when you repaint them, if you do, to use a high heat paint or one made for calipers. Using a good primer doesn't hurt either.
