K&N filter + tune
I know these CAI threads have been going around like mono at a middle school but there is one setup that I havnt seen discussed. I've been cruising these 05+ forums for a while now to do homework. I plan on getting mine around December-ish, and I know intake would be the first mod. I was leaning to a K&N filer and tune only, and yes, using the stock airbox. I have herd that the airbox and tubing is great from the factory. Since I dont really give squat about the looks, I was wondering if the gains on this would equal a C&L + Predator tune (my 2nd choice). Basically, what are the pros/cons of the stock airbox and tubing as opposed to a full aftermarket setup.
Are you referring to the drop in filter, or the cone filter? Either way, you wont be able to get the same power as with a C&L, but it wont be a ton off. Probably 15 hp/18-ish tq. with the cone. You should also look into the Airaid CAI, as it doesnt need a tune, and gets you similar numbers. Plus it can be tuned down the line for more power. Oh and look at BBK also, they have a tune-free CAI as well. Hope that helps.

Well actually, not all the aftermarket setups are for looks, most have a reason for their styling. The C&L for instance is more of a straight shot which provides for better flow, that and the metal helps keep engine heat out better thant the stock rubber. And the Airaid is specifically designed for better flow over the stock tube. If money isnt a concern, I would go with the C&L +tuner from Evo., about $600 or so. You won't be disappointed. However if you are on a budget, go with either the airaid or bbk, as you can get them for around $200, and then if you want tune them later for more power. But as they come, you get decent power, def. more than just the cone K&N +stock tube.
Umm....I thought metal conducted heat waaaaaaaaay more than plastic/rubber. I'm no scientist though...
I'm just gettin the drop in K&N myself...the stock setup is more than adequate enough for a NA car. Most of the CAIs out there make most of their power from the tune. I'm not saying the CAI doesn't make a difference, just that a less restrictive drop in filter and a good tune won't be far off...

You are correct sir, however in the tests I read the overall temp in the metal vs. the plastic the metal was lower. Also there were some stories goin around about the rubber, not sure if it was the stock rubber or not, deforming under the heat of driving to long. Dunno bout that one, seems more urban legend to me, but you never know.

It's interesting I have C/L CAI with Brenspeed tune and some days its regular and some days it shoots like its out of a cannon. So weather and moisture in the air really do make a difference. Kind of like NASCAR. Get the C/L CAI and Brenspeed tune you will not be sorry. www.brenspeed.com.
